Update 10/01/2015: This should be my final update to this post. The patent issue that ImasD is currently facing which you can read about below, has forced the company to issue refunds to persons who have pre-ordered the Clickarm One Modular tablet due to the fact that they cannot determine when this patent problem will be resolved. ImasD has promised that when the tablets do become available, persons who had previously pre-ordered the device will be the first to know.
Update 09/30/2015: ImasD has finally responded to customers who pre-ordered the Clickarm One modular tablet in what is a very long email that pretty much explains the problems they are facing because of using the letters ARM.
It is my understanding that this letter was first written in Spanish.
Dear Customer,
First of all we would like to thank, on behalf of the entire team of IMASD Technology, the trust placed in us. Thanks to the welcome that you have given us, today we are the Spanish technological reference.
In recent months we have still receiving numerous requests for information about our Clickarm device that even today we could not answer you for not having permission from our legal department.
As you know, ARM is a RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) architecture, which is why the company from UK (ARM Holdings) urge us to suppress our acronym ARM technology. We note that since we have always used IMASD acronym ARM Advanced Removable Module and never to mean that demand from the company’s Cambridge, Advanced RISC Machines (ARM).
This claim requires us to report that Clickarm production has been temporarily halted until the conflict is resolved.
Since IMASD want to expose our point of view with regard to this claim.
One of the first points we accessories is claimed, is that our internet domain www.click-arm.com is composed of two distinct words. In his day from IMASD we got in touch with the owners of domain www.clickarm.com to consider us with the URL above, to which the owners of the refused and had to get hold of the separate domain script.
As discussed above, ARM refers to a different aspect (Advanced Romovable Module). That, as you will see the first European registration of the mark was subsequently modified, as by bringing the imagery in the center gave rise to understand that these were two separate words, when in fact it was only one.
Similarly anyone can check the records for the brand, both record global and European … to do a generic search of the initials “arm”, there is only belonging to the group IMASD Technology, if not tens of thousands of references to marks where the object is only “arm” as logo and a brand.
If, in addition, large search for brands that contain only the letters “arm”, the number is multiplied by thousands, including classes in Nice we are registered. We understand the property of ARM ™ your company when it comes to certain aspects of their architecture, but do not recognize the ownership of the letters or acronyms “arm”.
By IMASD, the only reference to the ARM ™ brand has been to explain the architecture of the components we purchase from third parties. For this reason, we have never used a imagotype registered without permit application, unless one of our suppliers include it in their isotype and / or logo.
Since IMASD consider necessary to describe the technical specifications which are offered by our products, including architectures that are based. But we have reached out to ARM if they see fit to withdraw this aspect of our specifications.
Clarified why the information was so scant, we took the opportunity to inform you of your right to a refund. In addition to remind you’ll be among the first to buy it again when it’s released.
To manage the return, please provide us with a phone number where you can locate from next October 5, 2015.
Without further ado, thank you again for your confidence in us and remain at your disposal.
A greeting.
Update 09/23/2015: ImasD has responded to an email from a buyer who pre-ordered the modular tablet. In their response, they said “We will refund your money as soon as possible.” In his initial email to ImadD he requested that they send the tablet or give a refund, so the response clearly points to a possible cancellation of the Clickarm One Modular Tablet, or maybe a prolonged delay due to the patent issue that they are facing. Either way, it doesn’t seem like there will be a modular tablet being released any time soon.
Update 09/22/2015: I have just received a response from Circular Devices which confirms that ImasD is in fact facing a patent related issue that has resulted in the Clickarm One Modular tablet being delayed. We still haven’t received a response from ImasD, so we haven’t gotten any official details about this particular patent issue.
As it relates to the PuzzlePhone, it has not been affected by this patent issue.
Original Post:
A source has revealed to us that the Clickarm One Modular Tablet by Spain-based company ImasD Technologies has been delayed due to the company facing legal issues brought on by patent violations related to the word ARM. A Google search for ARM reveals a domain arm.com which leads to a company whose name is in fact ARM.
ARM (slogan, the Architecture For The Digital World), is a technology company whose product offerings include ” 32-bit and 64-bit RISC microprocessors, graphics processors, enabling software, cell libraries, embedded memories, high-speed connectivity products, peripherals and development tools.” If the word/abbreviation ARM is in fact at the center of what is reported to be a patent issue causing the delay of the Clickarm One Modular Table, then there is a good chance that this company ARM is involved. But please, take this with a grain of salt, this information has not been confirmed and we are yet to get a response from ImasD.
The Clickarm One modular table went on pre-order in March of 2015, and did fairly well since the company reported that all units were sold out. Shipment of the units were set to commence between July and September 2015, but no one has seen any sign of the products being shipped or even close to being shipped, and we are approaching the end of September.
There are reports that persons who have pre-ordered the tablets are facing an uphill battle trying to get information related to their purchase. Emails have been sent and the company contacted on social media, but still no response. If ImasD is in fact, having problems that are patent related, they have taken a questionable route in not providing sufficient information to persons who have spent their money to pre-order the modular tablets.
The Clickarm One Modular Tablet along with the PuzzlePhone Modular Smartphone were both expected to be based on the Click ARM modular platform.
Created by ImasD Technologies in collaboration with Samsung and Circular devices, “Click ARM is a modular platform of hardware and firmware for the development and manufacture of devices. It offers scalability and enormous economic savings both in research and in product development and manufacture.”
Since this patent issue points to the word ARM, it doesn’t seem to affect the modular technology that the company is working on hence Circular Devices the company behind the PuzzlePhone shouldn’t be affected. Circular Devices was contacted and they have explained that the PuzzlePhone is still very much under development.
I have contacted ImasD for information and as soon as it is available I will update this article so stay tuned.
